Shakespeare's Timeline


April 23rd, 1564 -


William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

1590 -

Shakespeare writes his very first play (Henry VI Part one), he also leaves Stratford-Upon-Avon to begin his career in London.

1593 - 

Shakespeare publishes Venus & Adonis, his first long published poem.

1594 - 

The theatres in London re-open. Over the next few years, Shakespeare's group called the 'Chamberlain's men' become the most popular acting group in London. Shakespeare also publishes ' The rape of Lucrece'.

1598 - 

Shakespeare is praised for a dozen plays of his work such as 'Romeo&Juliet', and 'A midsummer night's dream'.

1599 - 

Shakespeare's most famous plays are performed in the newly built Globe theatre.

1601 - 

After his father's death, Shakespeare writes 'Hamlet'. It is said at this point in his career, his work took a darker tone.

1608 - 

Shakespeare's work begins to take a lighter tone after the previous years. 'Cymbeline' and 'The Tempest' are examples of these.

1609 - 


A publisher named 'Thomas Thorpe' prints a collection of 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets.

1611 - 

Shakespeare moves back to Stratford-upon-Avon with his family and purchases the second biggest house in the location.

1613 - 

Shakespeare composes his last plays - 'Henry VIII', & 'Two noble kinsmen (AKA: Lost Cardenio)'. The Globe catches fire during a performance and burns the theatre to the ground.


April 23rd, 1616 - 

Shakespeare dies from illness, he dies on his fifty-second birthday.
