UAL - Level 3 PaPA - Acting Pathway - Unit 1 - 4
~Ilonka Flora
Week 7

We ran through the play and had feedback from Rob, which is that we need to be quiet off stage, everyone needs to be focused on each other and our performances. We need to have more care with stage awareness which means to be careful to not block other actors and not hide behind other actors too. 'Kiss and kill' is also relevant in this sense. We need to always try to stay in our characters whether we are a minor character or major character in a scene. Every part of the play always plays an important part, because if it wasn't important, it wouldn't be there in the first place. Making eye contact IS acting and is very important, you need to show the audience that you are telling a story to them. The pace needs more energy, otherwise, it appears rushed, so you must pay attention to your lines and actually try to understand the motive behind the line, so you must figure out the right way to say it. In addition to this, we must play intention which falls back to emotional memory. We must play the moment, be in the moment in order to make the play live. Reacting is crucial, be realistic and dramatic. During the party scene, we must not clump together in groups because that's not what parties are actually like, we should have people move around and fill any gaps on the stage. We need to focus on articulation, so stop slipping into the Shakespeare dialect. It's okay to bring ideas forward or just improvise with the script because if it's good we can keep it (Create key moments). Know your lines. We need to try and behave and react from moments of the scenes, we need to focus on this more than our lines to create great moments and this can also help with avoiding sounding like a robot. Spacing should be thought about... where or how should we be standing? Should we be quite close to someone or distant? We need to try to direct our speech at the audience. Around page 23 there will be barely any lighting changes, so it's important that we bleed into each scene as we have a time limit. Always warm up (Body, mind and mouth- speech).
