Proposal
Unit 12 proposal
Starting off unit 12, our class as a whole had some ideas of plays to look at already, including 'our country is good' and 'torn'. The reason why we didn't follow through with these plays is due to the fact that there were not enough of us, to begin with. We spoke about double casting each person, but some others that were included in our plans were a bit unreliable, so we were unsure whether we wanted to trust these people to learn their lines and cues for this play to come together because it has a lot of potential. In the end, it came to a vote where the majority did not want to do this play. We were then offered other ideas from each other and one that was good was girls.

The past two years I have been working on myself and gradually progressing. Each performance that I've done, I've been consistent in developing how my character feels, knowing where they were before they got to this particular place and situation, what they think of other characters and themselves. I've always been excited to jump in, jump out and then build my character. I want to feel what they feel, I want to show the audience that and I want them to feel it too because if they don't feel it or at least understand it, most of the time you're not doing a good job and it's not realistic.
With my first play, Romeo and Juliet, though my role was not the main in this play, I played Lady Montague and I had one line, but I had to really show emotions and thoughts through my actions and facial expressions. How does a mother feel? knowing that her son is in trouble? I’ve seen that through my mother and other mothers how precious a child becomes from the moment they are born. You no longer put yourself first like before, you live for your child and make decisions based on them, they are what comes first. I took that information from my observation and I tried to materialize it into my performance, putting myself in that motherly mindset and having to realise the process of pregnancy and the pain of birth that all contribute to the love that a mother has for her child.
Our final project for our first year was the play Fugee. I was cast as two characters and the character I was able to become of the most was Mother and I felt that in the way she held herself, the song I chose to sing as her- she had a whole essence she had a sound when she walked in you know it's Mother because you can hear her singing you can feel her presence. I played Rosa one of the Refugee children and it was great, but I understood that Mother was betrayed better because I noticed the feedback from my peers and teachers. My peers told me that they preferred to see me as mother rather than our other peer, and I believe it's because I really characterized her in my essence that when she went to wear the clothes that I had brought for mother and she sang the song that I chose for Mother it just didn't feel right to the others. I think it's important to remember that when you are getting into character, you shouldn't strip everything of yourself, because the actor is you and you are needed to create the character with your understanding, your ideas and your essence.
I took that and I reflected on my work and I saw the difference in how I had created a whole backstory for mother. I spoke about her past, her love story, her struggles and how she got to the point where she is however, for Roza, maybe it's because she's young I didn't really develop her story as much as I did Mother's, I just went based on what colour she likes, how she is with the other kids, what she went through before she got there, but it's not as in-depth as mother's story. I played a mother twice now and I feel like, from the first time when I played Mrs Montague, I was able to capture that sensation of what it's like to have a son and I took that experience and put it into the fugee performance using mothers monologue and I broke down every sentence to analyse how she feels and how she's delivering the lines in order to touch the audience.
The Donmar performance is easily my favourite performance a bit of all of us was mixed into this performance. we used all different variety of techniques such as physical theatre.
Girls our final project is very similar to fugee because it's about a true happening and it raises awareness- a lot of people aren't familiar with Boko Haram, they're not familiar with what happened in Nigeria and what happened to the girls. People worry about Theresa May and a Kardashian and even that is a point made in this play. They address how what's happening to them in their country whether they're suffering or not, does not appeal to many people, what appeals to people is entertainment and celebrities. The message is that there's always new news. I believe that Girls will encourage awareness about many subjects such as teenage pregnancy, underage marriage, PTSD and extremism I feel like these topics aren't spoken about as much as it should be.
Project concept
This play is called girls and it's focused on three girls in Nigeria, suffering through the terrible events of Boko Haram which is an extremist Islamic group. 200+ schoolgirls were kidnapped.
we want props to create an intimate vibe. As the show would go on we would add more props to show the illusion of time passing. We have a strict running time of one hour, currently, our play is 1 hour and 30 minutes. We would have to cut it down by cutting lines and scenes we don't think will add to the main storyline. We decided to select songs that were popular during that year that they were kidnapped some such as Beyonce's Upgrade U. I've noticed people assume that in Africa people aren't familiar with pop culture when in fact they are. Some traditional Nigerian songs will be used to keep that African feel. We've discussed the possibility of using a Nigerian accent, unfortunately, I, nor the girls are not able to do that so it's best if we did not create anything that would be cringy to watch.
I'll be researching all possible things that link to the play I'll be looking for information using the Google search engine, looking at any news articles like BBC. It's easy to find information based on Boko Haram on the internet, there are many articles and videos on this topic. I'll be looking into the traditions, like the food that the rich eat and the food that the poor eat, and any famous dishes that are well known for the country that both classes enjoy. Music will be looked at also myths & legends because that is also linked to the play when they talk about Womba, the creature that lives in the forest. All of this contributes to the Research and to the development of the play, understanding it in more depth.
The way that I will reflect on my work is that I will look at all the feedback given before the performance evaluate how I took action from it. I want to be able to reflect on all feedback and analyse whether I was able to remember them through my performance. I would look at the final recording and see what I liked and what I didn't like. Having the recording to look at afterwards is good because I'll be able to see what the audience saw, I will able to see what I did really well, what I could have done better.I'll also observe for any technical or physical issues and see how it was handled and whether it should have been done differently. I also want to reflect on this performance by comparing it to other, older performances and listening to any feedback after the show. the aim for me in this performance is to really touch the audience I want every person in the audience to be emotional, I want them to really connect with each one of the characters. I am going to be able to evaluate how we came up with solutions for any problems that arose and how it felt like having many ideas clashing together such as song options and prop costume ideas an then talk about whether it disrupted our progress.
